W hen I was invited to join a motley crew for two days down the Lugg I saw a couple of sun filled, lazy paddling days with a beer and pub dinner at the end of each daily jaunt.
No such luck! The days were filled with ‘lugging’ the canoes through and over trees, challenging broken weirs to find a route down and general exhaustion at the finish.
When day one, a journey of some 16.3 miles, takes 10 hours on a medium flowing river it brings home the endeavours undertaken to complete the journey. Day two offered a little more respite but still obstacles were in the way and hand saws, as per the day previous, had to come out to facilitate passage.
Oh, and one lost video camera having been washed out of my canoe when diving through a large hydraulic jump at the bottom of a steep weir. Ah well, that’s life….
